High Hurlands – Our Story

High Hurlands is a family owned company with over 45 years experience providing Nursing and Residential Care to young adults with severe learning and physical disabilities and complex needs.

The house was originally purchased as a family home by John and Diana Carter in 1959.  They lived in the house with their 5 young children until in 1971 High Hurlands Nursing Home was opened to provide care to severely disabled children.  Diana, a St Thomas’s trained Nightingale nurse, became day nurse, night nurse, cook, laundry staff and mother hen to the children who came to live at HH.  John ran the financial side of the business.  The Carter family lived within the Nursing Home until the early 1990’s when they decided it was time to move into a new house on the farm.

In the mid 1980’s we opened our first Residential Home on the grounds of the Nursing Home.  As this was a great success we opened 4 other small homes over the next few years, each accommodating 3 residents.

In 2017 the business is now a Partnership with Diana and two of her daughters, Fizz and Alicia.  Over the years the facilities have been updated and improved adding two large extensions to the Nursing Home, a Hydrotherapy Pool, Pottery, Multi Sensory and Art & Craft rooms.  There is a sensory garden and a greenhouse on the estate to provide fruit and vegetable during the summer months.

Our aim is to provide a ‘home from home’ for our special family, offering exceptional quality of care with a wide variety of activities to keep them stimulated and motivated.

We had our summer party yesterday with a hog roast and party games for around 100 family, friends and residents. The weather was very kind to us and the day was a great success.

Two residents have had a lovely weekend spending the day visiting the Hawk conservancy in Andover. This is a lovely place that they haven’t visited before, it has marvellous disabled access, with the ladies being able to access all of the birds. We felt very welcome and as the conservancy is set out on a loop we managed to view all of the birds before the flying display. It is a very peaceful place so the ladies were able to listen to all of the birds around them which they seemed to thoroughly enjoy. Following this the ladies attended a flying display which they loved! The flying display was very interactive, with the ladies being told many facts about the birds they were viewing whilst they were flying around them, the birds are trained to fly very close over the audience members heads so the ladies felt the birds passing them, although this did initially make them jump this was a lovely experience which they seemed to get a lot out of.
