History of High Hurlands

High Hurlands Nursing Home was opened in 1971 by Diana and John Carter.  Diana used her skills as a Registered General Nurse and mother of five to create a unique environment for people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, Physical Disabilities & associated complex healthcare needs.  Many of the people who came to live with Diana’s family in the early days are still part of our close community.

The business is now run by two of Diana’s daughters, Fizz & Alicia, who are passionate about maintaining the family atmosphere and high quality care.  The people living in the home are supported by a multi disciplinary team who ensure that High Hurlands keeps abreast of current person centres approaches and care practices.

In the early 1980’s we opened our first residential home within the grounds of the Nursing Home for 3 service users who did not need the support of a Registered Nurse.  Over the next few years we opened 4 additional residential homes which offer 24/7 care to the service users in small ‘family’ bungalows.

Our aim is to encourage independence where possible and to offer expectional care in a homely environment.  We are regularly praised for the quality of our activities and the interaction, communication and inclusion between the staff and the residents.
